Art builds connections and brings a more coherent meaning to our world.

The Arts are a pillar of the Canterbury community. Throughout Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School, students have the opportunity to study Visual and Performing Arts disciplines in elective classes and apply their learning in extracurricular performances, clubs, honor societies, and competition troupes.

Meet Lilly B.

College: Syracuse University

My theater experience at Canterbury has been truly amazing. Five years ago I would have never imagined that I would have the lead role in our school's spring musical, nor would I have imagined that I would be pursuing a BFA in scenic design at Syracuse University this fall. Canterbury theater has given me the opportunity to experience all that theater has to offer. I have been taught by the best and am forever grateful for all of my theater teachers' time, dedication, and commitment to help me succeed and hone my craft!

Discover the Value of a Canterbury Education

When different disciplines collaborate, it enriches the learning experience for everyone involved, fostering creativity and deeper understanding.

Artistry Unleashed

At Canterbury we believe students learn best from creating, doing, and making art hands-on. Middle School and Upper School students can apply for leadership roles backstage and in the technical booth, including Stage Manager, Light and Sound Board Operator, Crew Chief, Marketing and Publicity Designer, Wardrobe Supervisor, and Dance Captain. Across rehearsals and Production Team meetings, the Technical Director and Director mentor students in these positions to be well-equipped to run the show autonomously during Performances.

Cross-Curricular

Projects that integrate authentic art instruction across the curriculum are a win-win that allow students to express themselves, teach responsibility and problem-solving, and provide an alternate way to interpret and enhance what they learn.

Industrial Arts

Our industrial arts program focuses on teaching students the fabrication of objects using a variety of hand, power, or machine tools. This program provides practical skills and insights into the industrial and engineered world.

Technical Theater

Our Technical Theater program focuses on training students in various aspects of stage production, including technical direction, scenic carpentry, sound technology, lighting, and scenic art.
