Ways To Give
Annual Fund
The Canterbury Annual Fund is the single most important way to support the school.
The Canterbury Annual Fund is our highest giving priority. Each year through the Annual Fund, the Canterbury community ensures that our school continues to flourish and provide an innovative and inspiring learning environment for our students.
Annual gifts support the current school year and impact every student and faculty member, enriching the Canterbury experience and ensuring excellence. The Annual Fund is the resource that sustains Canterbury's rigorous curriculum, enhanced athletic and arts programs, innovative technology, and faculty professional development.
Families may donate to our annual fund online using a credit card or pledge a payment for a later date by contacting our Development Office.

What is Canterbury's Annual Fund, and why doesn't tuition cover the full cost of educating a child?
The Canterbury Annual Fund is the school's primary fundraiser.
Like all independent schools, our budget is set so that tuition covers about 85% of our expenses. The 15% balance of our needed income is derived from the Canterbury Annual Fund, which provides critical annual monetary support for teacher compensation, technology, the arts, sports and inspiring curriculum.
If our budget were set to cover the full 100% cost of educating each student at Canterbury, it would require a significant tuition increase. Instead of an increase, Canterbury asks every family to contribute a tax-deductible donation to Canterbury’s Annual Fund, thus reducing each student’s annual tuition cost and encouraging a diverse student body.
How is my annual fund gift used?
How much should I give?
Ideally, if each Canterbury family could contribute $1,500 per child to the Annual Fund, the school could run efficiently, and parents could enjoy a portion of their child(ren)’s “tuition” as tax deductible, since—unlike tuition dollars—all donations to the Annual Fund are tax deductible.
On average, Canterbury parents contribute $1,200 to the annual fund each year (pledges can be paid in installments). Annual fund gifts range from $25 up to our Head of School Society level gifts of $25,000 and above.
If everyone gives a meaningful gift, we can reach our goals. Your contribution—at any level—is very important! Canterbury applies for local and federal grants on a regular basis. In order to qualify for many of these grants, a 70% participation rate by our constituents is required. In addition, national associations and local organizations inquire about our participation rate. A strong message of commitment by our families and staff is given when we exceed 70% participation.
What is the difference between annual fund, a capital campaign, and endowment?
Gifts to a capital campaign allow us to build facilities, add programs, and strengthen our endowment. Capital campaign gifts are restricted to the specific purpose of the associated campaign. Annual Fund gifts by definition are unrestricted and fund the intentional gap between actual costs and tuition for each school year. All capital campaigns for new facilities include an endowed amount for perpetual facility maintenance.
Endowment
Hall Family Professional Development Endowment
Mac Hall served as Canterbury's Head of School from 2005-2022. It was important to Mac and his family, all of whom have been long-term supporters of Canterbury and its mission in so many ways, to leave a legacy that continues to support faculty and staff for years to come. The Hall Family Professional Development Endowment will provide for an annual distribution from earnings of the fund to supplement professional development for faculty and staff. Additionally, donations made to the Hall Family Professional Development Fund will be matched by the Hough Family Foundation, up to $150,000.
Martha P. Little Fund
This fund was established in memory of Canterbury's beloved librarian, who served the school for nearly three decades. The purpose of the Martha Little Fund is to make a Canterbury education available to lower school students with demonstrated financial need.
The Canterbury Foundation was created to build an endowment for the long-term benefit of the school. Once the Foundation's principal has grown to an appropriate level, interest will be used for future growth and to sustain and expand programs. Academic and co-curricular programs, faculty compensation, financial aid and facility maintenance will all benefit from gifts to the Foundation.
Donations given in memory or in honor of individuals have a lasting impact on our school. These contributions honor the significance of Canterbury School either to the individual in whose name the gift is made or to the donor making the gift. Such gifts are placed in the Canterbury Foundation.
