World Languages

The upper school World Language curriculum introduces students to the fundamentals of French or Spanish, emphasizing basic vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural aspects. Students learn to engage in simple conversations, understand written texts, and express themselves in spoken and written forms. Cultural elements such as traditions, holidays, and cuisine are incorporated to provide a holistic understanding of the language and its context. Through interactive activities, games, and multimedia resources, students develop language skills while gaining an appreciation for the richness of French and Spanish-speaking cultures. These languages stress the four communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The Department of World Languages provides programs of study that educate students to live, work, and lead in a complex, technological, and diverse world, preparing our students to become global citizens. Linguistic and cultural literacy are promoted while fostering a life-long appreciation for world languages and cultures. Each student can learn and benefit from acquiring a new language to develop a global mindset, which is crucial today. Studying a foreign language creates more positive attitudes and less prejudice toward all, while students’ creativity, problem-solving, listening, and memory skills are enhanced.
